The Setup

Proper Ball Position

Most golfers have been taught to play the ball inside the left heel (Figure 2/2a) or even further back in the stance (Figure 1/1a). Both of these positions would be fine for hitting irons and fairway woods as you want to hit down and through those shots.  However, if you were to use these ball positions with the Driver, you would create too much Backspin on the ball, you wouldn't be able to create proper Attack Angle and not enough Launch Angle to optimize your distance. Therefore, the correct position when hitting a Driver is just inside your left big toe (Figure 3/3a). This gives you the best opportunity to stay behind the ball at impact and hit the ball on the upswing which is a major factor in optimizing your Launch Angle and Ball Spin.

Front Facing (Caddie) View

Note: As the ball is moved forward in the stance to the correct position (Figure 3) the golfer has to tilt their Spine Angle backward slightly in order to maintain the straight line from the shaft of the club through their front arm (“Red Line”)

Rear Facing View

The rear view (Demonstrated Above) gives you an idea of what proper ball position should look like from the players perspecitive when addressing the ball.
